POSCO-India is aiming to become a company that contributes positively to society and is respected by customers worldwide. Over the last 38 years, POSCO, the parent company, has grown with the local communities and believes in mutual development along with communities and society through continuous CSR initiatives. POSCO-India wants to replicate the model in India for the benefit of the state of Orissa and India. Through this initiative the company attempts to help the society take one more step toward self-sufficiency.
POSCO-India has plans to fully support and work along with the Orissa government to spearhead social responsibility programs in Orissa and the rest of the country, as it does in Korea. The POSCO-India project will strive to raise the standard of living of the people of Orissa through proposed programs on workplace safety & health, and education and welfare programs that extend to the local community.
A detailed corporate social responsibility plan is currently being prepared, which includes in-depth inputs from the Government of Orissa and other relevant bodies.
Education POSCO-India has already announced scholarship programme for students in Orissa and other parts of the country through the ‘POSCO-TJ Park Foundation’, an independent and non-profit organization fully financed by POSCO, to encourage research, aid higher education and promote academic collaboration between India and Korea.
The initiative, which includes various programmes on Scholarships, Research Grants and Fellowships, have been awarded to students from India by the POSCO TJ Park Foundation. Scholarships were given to about 60 students, research grant to 2 scholars and fellowships to 5 Indian students in Korea.
The number of Indian students chosen for the year 2006-2007 under the scheme, included over 50 per cent from various institutes in Orissa and rest from Delhi, India. The students were offered an annual grant of USD 500. The number of students selected for scholarship is likely to double up from 2007 onwards.
A research grant of up to 10,000 USD will be accorded per thesis to these scholars. They have been selected by the Foundation and POSCO Research Institute as part of 20 research scholars to be selected from across Asia for various research projects.
The scholarships and research grants are one of POSCO-India’s initiatives in making significant contributions to the community in which they live and work. This is truly reflected in the fact that about half of the beneficiaries of the programmes are the students from Orissa. This is a long-term commitment made by POSCO-India so that the maximum number of students benefit from this project.
Fellowship for two-year Masters Programme in Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) is the third programme under which 5 students have been awarded fellowships at one of the top Korean universities. The fellowship covers full tuition fees and an annual stipend of 12 million Korean won (approx 12,000 USD).
