POSCO has environment preservation as one of the core principles in its management strategy to enhance corporate value.
POSCO has a well-defined Environment Policy and lucid environment management systems that make the company one of the world's most environment-friendly steel makers. From green purchasing guidelines and development of eco-friendly processes and products to fostering cleaner communities, POSCO has specific environmental objectives and strategic action plans. Indeed, the company has earned worldwide recognition as an environmentally-friendly company by IISI (International Iron and Steel Institute) and has won many global awards for its proactive efforts in this area.
POSCO believes that, as a responsible corporation, it is important to practice an environmental-friendly manufacturing process from raw material to finished product. Its Environmental Accounting System is designed to analyze environmental costs and benefits generated from energy recovery and recycling. POSCO's dedication to the environment cause is so deep that it has introduced the Six Sigma system of data-driven quality measures for optimal performance in its environmental initiatives.
POSCO has been a strong supporter of environmental protection policies in the steel industry, and has put priority on protection policies as well as investments on environment-preserving facilities. POSCO’s investments for eco-friendly facilities at Pohang and Gwangyang Works amounted to KRW 145.5 billion in 2004.
POSCO developed FINEX, an environment friendly iron-making technology, in May 2003 and it is currently in operation for a 600,000 tonne capacity plant (it has also been chosen for POSCO-India project). In addition, POSCO continues to test low-temperature plasma technology that simultaneously removes air pollutants. The company has developed more than 70 eco-friendly products to date, with applications in food and beverage packaging, residential and commercial construction and other industries.
POSCO fosters green environments in many different ways - by creating public parks, turning former landfills into nature preserves, promoting awareness through the e-Green World webzine, or sponsoring water resource conservation campaigns.
At the industrial level, POSCO has conducted fundamental research to build Eco-Industrial Parks since 2004. The purpose of this project is to seek ways of recycling byproducts as well as wastes, and to eventually achieve zero emission of pollutants.

POSCO-India will strive to replicate the success of POSCO's environmental excellence in India. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for the construction of the POSCO-India steel plant and port began in August 2005. Port-related EIA is being conducted by NIO (National Institute of Oceanography), a renowned research institute in the field of Oceanography, and is expected to be completed in 2006.
In terms of EIA for the steel plant construction as well as operations, POSCO-India is working towards implementing the state-of-the-art FINEX technology, a process that minimizes environmental impact by removing the coking and sintering processes, both of which are major causes of pollution.
Forest and CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) clearance proposals have already been completed and are being reviewed by related parties. Forest Policy and EIA on mine development are being prepared for minimizing environmental impact.
