POSCO wins accolade for outstanding Sustainable Management

Listed in SAM-Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for two consecutive years
POSCO, The only steel company on the list

Bhubaneswar, September 12, 2006: POSCO, the third largest steel manufacturer in the world and parent company of POSCO-India, has been selected as the leading company in sustainable management by SAM (Sustainability Asset Management) Research Inc. of Switzerland and Dow Jones of the United States.

POSCO is the only steelmaker on the DJSI list released on September 6, 2006 comprising three hundred eighteen companies from 2,500 DJGI listed companies. And the company has been selected for the second year in a row acquiring distinction as a role model in sustainable management.

Commenting on the development Mr. Soung-Sik Cho, CMD of POSCO-India said, ‘We as a part of POSCO family are very proud on the DJSI listing for two consecutive years.’ He further added that, ‘POSCO-India will emulate the standard in all its operations and will strive to be the most respected company in India’.

Dow Jones and SAM (Sustainable Asset Management) carried out Sustainability Evaluation of 2,500 companies worldwide on Dow Jones Global Index and selected the top 10% companies based on industry sectors for DJSI companies. This year POSCO acquired remarkable scores in all three evaluation parts of Economic, Environmental and Social dimensions.

POSCO has actively engaged in environmental investments and social contributions since its establishment and has played a role as a responsible global citizen. In this year’s evaluation, POSCO was particularly recognized for its efforts in corporate governance, code of conduct, and environmental management system. The highlight of the assessment is POSCO’s 100% score in ‘Customer Relationship Management’ section. POSCO has also achieved the highest score in the Human Capital Development category under Social Dimension.

Sustainability is the emerging corporate assessment standard to prove a company’s long-term survival and growth capacity. DJSI companies are role models of sustainable management and DJSI is considered as a direct standard for investment, especially Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) fund. Currently, 56 investment firms throughout the world are using this sustainability index and more than 5 billion USD worth of investments are made based on this index.

POSCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Orissa in June 2005, to set up a 12-mtpa green field steel plant near Paradip, Jagatsinghpur District, Orissa, with an estimated investment of 12 billion USD.
