Kujanga, August 30, 2006: POSCO-India, Indian subsidiary of POSCO – the third largest steel manufacturer in the world has opened a new office in Kujanga, Jagatsinghpur to get closer to the people in proposed site and periphery. This new office is completely dedicated to communications and rehabilitation & resettlement for locals and thereby aims to address issues and concerns of people related to the project.
Speaking on the inaugural ceremony, CMD POSCO-India, Mr. Soung Sik Cho, stated that “our goal is to design an adequate and fair R&R Package and to adopt a suitable CSR programme thereby extending direct and indirect benefits to the local people so that, we would be truly welcomed by the local people”. Through the new office POSCO-India plans to continuously work toward proliferation of facts and to address the needs of the families, directly and indirectly affected by the steel plant construction.
The New office in Kujanga has illustrative display panels for local visitors with not only details related to various aspects of the project and benefits of R&R policy but also the company and its parent company, POSCO. The office has scores of information materials like brochures, leaflets and fact sheets covering various details regarding company, project and R&R benefits which the visitors can take back home for further reference. It also has an avant-grade projection corner with films designed for infotainment of the primary stakeholders in villages.
The office at Kujanga has over 10 staff members. Out of which one dedicated communications officer is in charge of facilitation and guidance for local visitors. The office is opened on all days of the week barring second and fourth Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays. Local visitors are welcome during office hours to come and collect requisite information. All queries related to R&R by locals will be addressed by the R&R Officer in Charge.
For the benefit of local people and for better reach the company has already initiated measures like health camps, installation of mast lights, leaflet dissemination etc. From now the Kujanga office will provide a platform for sharing the concerns of local residents especially the to-be displaced and affected people in the proposed site. The company is continuously working towards proliferation of facts related to the project and to address the needs of the families, directly and indirectly affected by the steel plant construction.
POSCO-Indiahas four offices across India. The Corporate Head Office in Bhubaneswar is operational since August 2005. The POSCO-India Paradip Office was instituted in January this year to expedite the construction plans. The office in Delhi is meant for coordination at the central level. The new office in Kujanga intends to be a platform to establish a communication channel and address the concerns of the local residents in proposed area.
POSCO, the mother company of POSCO-India, has grown with the local communities over the last 38 years. The company has been seeking ways of mutual development with communities and society through continuous communication with the residents in Pohang and Gwangyang, where its Steelworks are located in Korea. POSCO’s warmth has coursed through in South Korea and also has reached many of its global neighbours abroad at times of crises. Similarly POSCO-India intends to transfer the benefits of its plant to the communities directly and indirectly through employment, healthcare and education.
Like its precursor POSCO, POSCO-India too values people and is making all efforts to build bonds with the community. The company is working steadily to spread accurate information on the project.
