POSCO-India guarantees job& training for displaced families
  • Company committed to provide one job per displaced family
  • First batch of training to start in October 2006

Bhubaneswar, October 4, 2006:

POSCO-India, the Indian subsidiary of POSCO, the third largest steel manufacturer in the world, today announced its commitment for providing jobs to all displaced families along with a series of vocational training programmes.

POSCO-India will provide one employment to the all original displaced families and also families losing all agricultural land in accordance with the provision of the Odisha New R&R Policy 2006.

In addition, the Company plans to provide skill training to youth from displaced and affected families, between the age group of 14 & 30 for increased employability. Not only the training tuition fee but also the expenses for uniforms, accommodation and food will be borne by POSCO-India for six months till the completion of training.

The first training batch will start in October 2006 and will continue for six months and about 30 select trainees will be admitted to the Centre for Industrial Training (ITC), Jagatsinghpur, under the aegis of Dr Rushi kumar Mohnaty, Institute of Education & Technology. The Institute will impart theoretical & practical training in masonry and welding to begin with. 

Chairman and Managing Director, POSCO-India, Mr. Soung Sik Cho, said that "The welfare of the families coming under our project site is high on our priority list and POSCO-India will make all possible efforts to provide the locals who are directly and indirectly affected by the project a better life for tomorrow ". He emphasized that "POSCO-India will provide employment to all displaced families. To increase their employability Vocational training programmes will be conducted at regular intervals".

Mr. Priyabrata Pattnaik, IAS, Principal Secretary, Dept. of Commerce and Transport, Govt. of Odisha and Nodal officer, POSCO-India said “POSCO is a reputed company worldwide, and we are certain of POSCO-India’s commitment towards the local community. He further added that “this vocational training programme has been initiated as a win-win situation for both, locals and the Company. On one hand there would be available resource of skilled man power for the forthcoming constructions of the company and on the other hand trained youth will have better opportunities for employment.”

POSCO-India plans to construct its Training Center in Sandhakuda, Paradip in the district of Jagatsinghpur to conduct skill up-gradation training programmes. Meanwhile, the company will arrange for such vocational training in identified institutes with available training facilities in and around Jagatsinghpur.
