POSCO-India extends specialized medical assistance to the people of Orissa
Locals to undergo Cleft Lip & Palate Surgery, free of cost
Jagatsinghpur, July 10, 2006: POSCO-India, Indian subsidiary of POSCO– the fourth largest steel manufacturer in the world, launched a cleft lip surgery and palate correction camp for identified patients of Jagatsinghpur district today. The inauguration will be held at Jagatsinghpur Headquarters hospital today and the surgeries will be carried out in SCB Medical College, Cuttack from tomorrow. The programme will continue till July 13 and all medical assistance will be provided by POSCO-India free of cost to the patients.
This initiative will cover eight villages of Dhinkia, Govindpur, Nuagaon, Polang, Noliasahi, Bayanala Kandha, Bhuyanpal, Jatadhari from the Gram Panchayats of Dhinkia, Nuagaon and Gada Kujang from Erasama block of Jagatsinghpur sub-division coming under POSCO-India’s proposed plant area. Affected locals of all ages are expected to avail the medical & surgical assistance being offered.
The camp is being conducted under the expertise of a specialized 13-member team comprising of medical professors from the Dental Department of Seoul National University (SNU), the top university in Korea. The team is led by the renowned Prof. Dr. Pill-Hoon Choung., Dean Dental Department, SNU
Mr Soung-Sik Cho, Chairman-cum-Managing Director POSCO-India said, “POSCO-India is committed to working towards the welfare of the people of Orissa. We observed that cleft lip is a widespread problem amongst the locals. Hence, we were inspired to bring this specialized medical & surgical assistance for the betterment of the locals.”
On the ground level POSCO-India officials are working together with the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) and Collector of Jagatsinghpur to make this effort a success. The CDMO, Jagatsinghpur through deputed field functionaries has identified preliminary cases for the camp. Subsequently, the final screening for patients to be operated will be carried out today by the surgeons. Dental Council of India, Dental Council of Orissa, Jagatsinghpur district administration and Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Orissa, are extending all possible support for the programme.
After signing the MoU, POSCO-CSR scheme has extensively focused on India, especially Orissa. The medical camp exclusively meant for the benefit of local residents comes close on the heels of POSCO-TJ Park scholarship announcement. There are a few more programmes in pipeline. Besides, POSCO-India itself is making a comprehensive CSR plan for the people of Orissa, where it is setting up its greenfield project.
Over the last 35 years, POSCO has grown with the local communities and believes in mutual development along with communities and society through continuous CSR initiatives. POSCO-India wants to replicate the model in India for the benefit of the state of Orissa. Through this initiative the company attempts to help the community take one more step toward self-sufficiency.
