Bhubaneswar, January 31, 2008: As promised earlier, today, 28 students from the three Gram Panchayats of Nuagaon, Gadakujang and Dhinkia falling under the proposed site of POSCO-India steelworks, were awarded POSCO-TJ Park Foundation scholarship for Academic Year 2007-2008 at a function held in POSCO-India Kujang Office. Mr. Uma Ballav Pattnaik, Executive Director, POSCO-India gave away the citations in a brief awards ceremony. Mr. Ardhendu Mohapatra, GM, R&R and Head of Kujang office, Dr. SK Mohapatra, GM-HR, Mr SR Kim, GM-Strategic Planning, Mr Shashanka Pattnaik, Sr. Mgr PR and other senior officials of POSCO-India were also present during the occasion.

In an exemplary move, this scholarship was exclusively offered to the students from the to-be-displaced families and those belonging to the economically backward sections from the plant site. While 10 scholarships of USD 500/ each was awarded on the basis of pure merit, another 18 scholarships of USD 250/ each were awarded taking into account additional criteria of socio-economic disadvantages. Recently, in December 2007, 29 students from prominent universities of Orissa were awarded also Scholarships.

It may be mentioned that since 2006, POSCO TJ Park Foundation has been offering a series of scholarships and grants for meritorious students and research scholars from leading universities of Orissa and India to encourage research, aid higher education and promote academic collaboration.

Encouraging the students on the occasion, Mr. Uma Ballav Pattanaik, ED, POSCO-India expressed “As a part of the long-term commitment of the company towards the people of the plant site, the initiative would go a long way in motivating the meritorious students to do well in future.” He further announced that POSCO-India has plans to launch more scholarships under its CSR programme for deserving students from the project site area to support higher studies after High School.

POSCO-India project is committed to spearhead social responsibility programmes in the plant site. The project is expected to bring in its wake significant socio-economic infrastructural development in the region.
