Mr. Soung-Sik Cho is the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of POSCO-India Private Limited, a subsidiary of POSCO, the world’s third largest steel producer. His unique blend of academics and vast career experience has contributed immensely towards making POSCO a world leader, and in the smooth inception of POSCO-India.
Born in South Korea on September 7, 1950, Mr. Cho pursued his university studies in Yonsei University, Seoul, where he obtained his degree in Metallurgy. Mr. Cho became a part of the POSCO family in 1974. He started his career in the rolling plant of Pohang Works, and cultivated hands-on experience in operational steel production until 1981. He then moved on to Technology and Development. In 1986, Mr. Cho was posted in POSCO’s Tokyo Office, Japan, after which he expanded his base to Management Planning in 1990. In 1996, he moved to the Overseas Investment Division as a key member in Asian Project Development.
In 2003, he advanced to the helm of affairs as Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategic Planning, and Head of Investment Management for India and China projects. He took on additional responsibilities as the Head of Investment Management for Finance and LNG project in 2005. In 2006, he was elected as Senior Executive Vice President and Board member of POSCO, and took charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of POSCO-India.
Mr. Cho has authored many papers for refereed steel journals and conferences during his career. He has in-depth experience in initiating Greenfield ventures, including projects such as POSMAC (iron ore mining project in Western Australia with BHP Billiton) and ShunPo: Continuous Galvanized Line (CGL) Project in Southern China. Mr. Cho has travelled across the globe and has focused on numerous countries during his course of work, namely, Thailand, China, Venezuela, Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, Vietnam, Belgium, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, USA, England, Germany, Singapore, India, Japan, and Slovakia.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy, Government of Korea conferred the prestigious Award of Merit to Mr. Cho on the completion of the third phase of Gwangyang Works in December, 1990.
Mr. Cho has his home in Seoul and Bhubaneswar. He is a humanitarian and a patron of the arts who appreciates music, books and live theatre. He also enjoys outdoor pursuits such as hiking and golf.
